Bicycle Fun and Safety Day rolls into the Kids Safety Village this weekend.
When – Saturday May 25, 2013 from noon until 3pm
Where – Whitby at 1129 Athol Street.
The DRPS is inviting parents to bring their kids to 1129 Athol St. in Whitby for a chance to learn proper safety in a kid-sized version of a real town. Bring your bike, helmet and bring your friends. Additional activities will include face painting, a jumping castle and a chance to have your bike inspected by an expert from Impala Sports. Entry is free, but non-perishable food items will be accepted for donation to local food banks. Hot dogs, drinks and treats will also be available at the canteen for a small fee.
The village features small buildings, detailed roadways, traffic lights and road signs, and an operational railway crossing. This realistic setting allows kids to test their road safety skills as a pedestrian and cyclist, in a safe and controlled environment.
Kids are reminded about safety techniques such as:
• Wearing a properly fitted helmet
• Riding with traffic instead of against it
• Not to riding on the road under the age of 10
• Proper use of hand signals to let drivers know what you plan to do
